We are all busy with different daily activities but how you manage your time will determine how many of these tasks you get done. We live in an age where it is easy to suffer from information overload due to the fact that we all have easy access to a lot of data due to technology.



This topic reminds me of a time I was way behind schedule on my MBA assignments and I was swamped with other tasks in my personal life at the time.


There was a good chance I might fail the courses in that term, read till the end of this article to find out how it turned out but for now let's go back to "Time Management".

Time Management


"Time management” is the process of organizing and planning how to split your time among specific activities. Effective time management helps you to work smarter – not harder – so that you can get more done in less time, even when a tight schedule and demands are high. Poor time management negatively impacts your effectiveness and can result in you being stressed out.


We all know that for a busy person there is never enough time in the day. But, since we all get the same 24 hours, how is it that some people achieve so much more with their time than others? The answer lies in effective time management.


The highest achievers manage their time exceptionally well. By using the time-management techniques in this section, you can improve your ability to function effectively – even with a tight schedule with deadlines.


Good time management requires you to be result-oriented: being busy isn’t the same as being effective. (remember the old adage; "busy doing nothing", lol)


Spending your day in a frenzy of activity often achieves less, because you’re dividing your attention between so many different tasks. Good time management lets you work smarter – not harder – so you get more done in less time.

“Time management” refers to the way that you organize and plan how much time you spend on specific tasks.

Create time to think and plan


You need to set time aside to look at your goals and as yourself some questions such as:


Is this goal important?

How does this goal affect my life?

What is my plan for achieving this goal?

How can I improve the plan?


Asking these questions aids you in setting SMART goals.


Create a plan for each day


You need to create a basic plan of what you need to achieve each day, the focus should be on important tasks for the day.


Prioritize Tasks


You need to prioritize your tasks according to the importance and needs, both for your personal life, business, or work. You have to avoid trying to get everything done and just focus on the critical tasks or those with closer deadlines.


Do it in Chunks


Chunking is a time management technique in which you group similar tasks together in a plan to ease productivity. For example, you can plan your tasks in groups that affect similar aspects of your life such as work tasks, family tasks, home tasks, and so on.


Set deadlines


Set deadlines for your tasks as this will help you focus on getting them done within the scheduled timeline.


Focus on the results


Focusing on the desired results helps you with measuring your success in the different tasks.


Downtime is good for you


When you have so many tasks to get done, you need to take breaks after completing some tasks to clear your head and stay fresh in order to remain productive.


Check your habits


If there are habits of yours that do not aid you in being productive then you will need to eliminate these habits and build up the habits that aid you in improving productivity.


Of course, you will fail in achieving the desired results within the scheduled time but do not dwell on the negatives but rather focus on the positives and the solutions to these challenges.

It may seem like a waste of time learning about time management skills, but the benefits are limitless. Let's look at some of them:

Productivity is about getting the desired results in less amount of time. Productivity is a measure of efficiency.

As an individual who is known to be productive, you are seen as a valuable asset by any organization of individuals, which will definitely be of benefit to you in your career or business.

When you are efficient you will be able to spend more time on the activities that matter the most to you.

When you are a high achiever in any corporation or society you will always have more opportunities for growth as your reputation grows.

Being efficient will definitely aid you in self-improvement and growth.


Effects of poor time management


Not being able to achieve good time management will definitely impact your life negatively. Let us look at some of these consequences:


Missed deadlines


Poor time management will lead to you missing deadlines for tasks, which will definitely have a negative impact on your personal life, career, or business.


Inefficient workflow


Without a good plan, you will end up being non-productive or inefficient, due to the fact that you will probably end up jumping back and forth from task to task without actually completing them.


Poor work quality


You may end up rushing some tasks to meet up deadlines and this will impact the quality of the job done.


A poor professional reputation and a stalled career


Of course, this will lead to a non-productive reputation which may affect you personally and your career growth.


Higher stress levels


Not having a good master plan may lead to been stressed out due to struggling to meet up with deadlines and maintain an acceptable level of work quality.

Spending a little time learning about time-management skills will yield significant benefits in your personal life and career. There are so many other tips for time management and benefits that are not mentioned in this post that you will discover on your own when you start practicing effective time management in your daily tasks. Back to the story, I was telling, I had no other choice but to come up with a master plan and prioritize the tasks ahead of me. I thank God that this worked out positively and I passed my MBA courses for that term and was able to complete the family tasks as well although I had to shelve some other tasks at that period that were not urgent. So time management is really key to your productivity.
